For the first time, a waste oil collection operation took place on Thursday 15 May 2025 on Ile de Sein, an island located 23km off the Brittany coast. This is an unprecedented initiative made possible thanks to involvement of Cyclevia, the collection operator, SARP Ouest, and councillors from the island.
Ile de Sein has been facing a critical situation in waste management over the last few decades, in particular regarding waste oils from local maritime and technical activities. These oils, stored in very poor conditions and sometimes in flood-prone areas, represent a risk for the environment and health.
As part of a historical collection operation, was called in to recondition 2.5 tonnes of waste oils that have accumulated on the island.
A second stage will follow: this waste oil, will be shipped to the port of Audierne where they will be pumped and gathered at the Guilers depot. This hazardous waste will then be sent to an appropriate treatment centre for recycling or energy recovery.
In addition to this unique operation relieving the situation, this action also marks a new start to waste oil management on Ile de Sein. Cyclevia will cover all costs for collecting and shipping this waste, guaranteeing a free service for the local authority.
