REGENERATION 2024: An extensive project to increase oil circularity

Two years after commencing its activity, Cyclevia, the producer responsibility organization for the oils and lubricants sector, is today launching its call for projects to build the very first waste oil regeneration plant in France capable of producing Group 2 and/or 3 base oils.

With 209 000 tons of used oils collected in 2022, 79% of which were oriented towards regeneration, the oils and lubricants sector is rather well-organized. Nevertheless, whilst Group 1 regenerated oils in France are able to successfully find outlets, they fail to comply with evolutions in the sector and do not meet the quality expected by lubricant formulators holding the lion’s share of the French market. In the absence of an offer of this type at national level, numerous formulators consequently acquire stocks from other European countries, namely Germany and Italy. But once again, the volumes available are insufficient to meet needs given that demand is constantly rising.

In light of this observation and in keeping with the commitment made in its specifications, following a year of preparation, Cyclevia is proud to announce the launch of REGENERATION 2024: an extensive, national initiative which, in years to come, will boost the volume and quality of regenerated oils to match the demand of a market which is not only environmentally-aware but also striving for excellence.

The online call for projects launched on Thursday February 15th, 2024 concerns the creation, in France, of the first ever waste oils regeneration unit able to generate Group 2 and/ Group 3 base oils, high-quality oils presenting with the right characteristics to be able to be incorporated into “new” lubricants intended for state-of-the-art equipment, and namely Euro 5 and 6 engines. This new unit, which will require very significant investments, will produce several thousand tons of regenerated oil every year.

For Cyclevia, this project, which is both ambitious and necessary, constitutes and important stage in its development with respect to its stakeholders. It is also further proof of the benefits of the producer responsibility organization with respect to our sector.

In addition to its role as initiator and overseer of the project, Cyclevia will provide significant backing to the industrial solution put in place by the candidate selected. In the future, Cyclevia will also do its utmost to promote the image of regenerated oils and secure new outlets for these products that formulators and holders will be proud to use.

Lastly, and more globally, this unique project in France comes within the re-industrialization policy put in place by the public authorities, a policy which is a source of both job creation and innovation.
